What to Expect During the Initial Assessment

Starting ABA therapy is an exciting step toward helping your child build meaningful skills and confidence. Before therapy begins, your child will take part in an initial assessment. This process helps our team learn about your child’s strengths, interests, and areas that may need extra support.

At Premier Mental Health in High Point, NC, our goal is to make every family feel informed and comfortable from the very first meeting. Here is what you can expect during your child’s initial assessment.

1. Getting to Know Your Child and Family

The assessment begins with a conversation between you and our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). We will ask about your child’s history, daily routines, communication skills, and behaviors at home or school. This helps us understand your child’s unique personality and what motivates them.

We encourage parents to share as much as possible during this time. Every detail helps us create a program that fits your child’s needs and family goals.

2. Observation and Play Based Activities

Next, the BCBA will spend time interacting with your child through play, conversation, or structured activities. This allows us to observe how your child learns, communicates, and responds to directions or new tasks.

The assessment may include simple games, matching activities, or pretend play, depending on your child’s age and ability level. The goal is to make the experience positive and comfortable while gathering valuable information about your child’s current skills.

3. Skill and Behavior Assessment Tools

To guide therapy planning, our team may use standardized assessments that measure communication, social, and daily living skills. These tools help us identify areas to focus on, such as:

  • Communication and language

  • Social interaction and play skills

  • Daily living and self help routines

  • Behavior and emotional regulation

Each child’s assessment is individualized to ensure we get an accurate picture of where they are right now and how we can best support them moving forward.

4. Creating a Personalized Treatment Plan

Once the assessment is complete, your BCBA will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child’s goals. This plan outlines specific targets for growth and the teaching methods we will use in sessions.

At Premier Mental Health, our programs focus on building independence through communication, social skills, community outings, and self help skill development. We also offer flexible after school hours to fit your family’s schedule.

5. Reviewing Results and Next Steps

After the plan is created, we will meet with you to review the results and discuss how therapy will look day to day. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, share priorities, and collaborate with your child’s BCBA.

Together, we will decide on start dates, session times, and goals that make sense for your child and family.

6. Starting the Journey

Once therapy begins, you will see your child’s progress unfold through structured learning, play, and positive reinforcement. Our goal is to make every step of the process supportive, transparent, and full of growth opportunities.

At Premier Mental Health, we believe that collaboration and consistency create lasting change. We are here to walk with you through every part of your child’s journey.
